Easy Steps to Updating Your Computer’s Operating System
Most people don't give much thought to their computer's operating system. We install it when we get a new computer, then set it up and forget about it - or at least until it starts running or slows down. But just like our phones and tablets, our computers also need regular updates. The easiest way is to update your computer's operating system.
What is an operating system?
Simply put, an operating system (OS) is the software that manages all the hardware resources attached to your desktop or laptop. It also provides the foundation for the application to work on. Without an operating system, a computer is useless.
All computers, tablets and smartphones are designed to have their own specific set of hardware components, from the central processing unit (CPU) to memory, displays and keyboards. The operating system coordinates all of this so that you can use your device.
Steps to update your computer's operating system
Updating a Windows computer is easy, but not entirely intuitive. Here are some steps you can take to make sure the process goes smoothly:
● First, make sure your computer is connected; updating your laptop battery in the process may cause complications. If you're using a desktop, just plug your computer into an outlet or a surge protector. Your laptop should also be plugged into a power outlet.
● Next, open the Control Panel by clicking on the Start menu and selecting the gear icon in the lower left corner. The options menu opens; click the Update & Security option.
● There are several options to choose from in Update and Security. The program you want is called Windows Update, so click that option.
● On the next screen, you'll see several options - most of which are self-explanatory, but you should click the "Check for Updates" button and choose whether you want to install available updates.
● Check the Update box and click OK.
● Click Install and wait 15-20 minutes.
Note: Do not turn off your computer or put it into sleep mode during an update, as this may cause complications later.
Take away
An operating system is the software that runs a computer. It does everything from maintaining hard drives to tracking mouse clicks. It can even double as an environment for your favorite programs. If you want to enjoy the best features and super speed, you should check and update your operating system from time to time!
